OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer. For Rivian, that means panels, glass, sensors, and lighting sourced directly from Rivian Service.
Aftermarket parts can be cheaper, but they often vary in metal composition, bonding compatibility, sensor bracket alignment, and finish. On a mixed-material vehicle, an off-brand panel can compromise crash performance and corrode at the seam.
Glass is the most common compromise. Some non-OEM windshields meet the basic safety spec but lack the precise ADAS-camera mount geometry. The result is a calibration that 'passes' but reads slightly off in real-world driving.
For these reasons, we use OEM parts exclusively. The cost difference is real but small once you factor in warranty preservation and resale value. Always ask your shop where parts are sourced.
