Glossary

Repair terms, defined.

Anytime someone says “we need to recalibrate the ADAS after sectioning the unibody,” you should know exactly what that means. Now you will.

ADAS
Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems. The camera, radar, and software that powers Driver+, lane keeping, AEB, and blind-spot warning.
AEB
Automatic Emergency Braking. The system that applies the brakes when a collision is imminent.
BMS
Battery Management System. The brain that monitors and protects the high-voltage battery pack.
Calibration
Aligning a sensor or system to OEM specification so it reads accurately. Required after most front-end repairs.
Diminished value
The reduction in your vehicle's resale value after a collision and repair, even when the work is perfect.
Driver+
Rivian's advanced driver-assistance package with adaptive cruise control, Highway Assist, and lane centering.
EDV
Electric Delivery Vehicle. Rivian's commercial vans, including those operated by Amazon.
FNOL
First Notice of Loss. The initial insurance claim filing after a collision.
Frame bench
A precision bench that holds and pulls a vehicle to factory frame geometry.
Gigacast
A single-piece front or rear underbody casting used on next-gen platforms like Tesla Model Y and likely Rivian R2.
HV isolation
High-voltage isolation. The certified lock-out procedure that disconnects the battery from the vehicle before service.
I-CAR Gold Class
The highest training tier from the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair. Indicates fully trained staff.
ICE
Internal Combustion Engine. The traditional gasoline drivetrain replaced by EV.
Loss notice
Insurance terminology for a documented incident filing.
OEM
Original Equipment Manufacturer. Parts produced by or for the manufacturer to factory specification.
PDR
Paintless Dent Repair. A method for removing dents without disturbing the factory paint.
PPF
Paint Protection Film. A self-healing clear film applied to body panels to prevent chips and rock damage.
Quad motor
Rivian's four-motor drivetrain, with one motor per wheel for precision torque vectoring.
R1S
Rivian's three-row electric SUV.
R1T
Rivian's electric pickup truck.
R2
Rivian's next-generation midsize platform launching mid-decade.
R3
Rivian's next-generation compact platform launching after R2.
RCCC
Rivian Certified Collision Center. An audited certification from Rivian to perform OEM repair.
Sectioning
An OEM-approved repair technique that cuts and welds a portion of a damaged panel instead of replacing the whole panel.
Supplement
An addition to the original insurance estimate when extra damage or work is discovered.
Total loss
When the cost to repair plus diminished value exceeds a percentage of the vehicle's value, the insurer declares total loss and pays the value.
Tonneau
The powered rolling cover over the R1T bed.
Underbody armor
Skid plates and reinforcement panels that protect the underside of the vehicle from off-road impacts.
V2H
Vehicle-to-Home. Bidirectional charging that lets your Rivian power your home during outages.
