Tesla pioneered the gigacast at scale. Rivian's R2 and R3 platforms are widely expected to use similar single-piece front and rear underbody castings. This dramatically changes repair economics.
On the upside, fewer parts mean faster assembly, lighter vehicles, and improved structural performance in many crash modes. On the downside, a damaged gigacast historically has meant full replacement, which is expensive and often pushes vehicles toward total loss.
The good news is that the industry is rapidly developing certified gigacast repair procedures, including sectioning and welding techniques for cast aluminum. We are investing in the tooling and certifications now so that when R2 and R3 owners need us, we have a real repair path.
