Insurance total-loss threshold on a Rivian: how to fight back.

If your carrier wants to total your Rivian, you have options. Here's the playbook.

Total loss is declared when repair cost plus diminished value exceeds a percentage of the vehicle's current retail value. The threshold varies by state, but in California it's roughly 80 percent.

Three things drive total loss in your favor or against you. The retail value the carrier used, the repair estimate they accepted, and the diminished value calculation.

If you disagree with the retail value, send three comparable listings to the adjuster. Rivian retail is volatile and adjusters sometimes use outdated comps.

If the repair estimate looks inflated, get a second opinion from a certified shop. We provide independent estimates free of charge.

If the carrier insists on total loss but you want to keep the vehicle, ask about an owner-retain settlement. You get the depreciation value and we rebuild the truck. It is often the financially right move.
